So what career mistakes do twenty-somethings make? You probably didn't say, 'I've got three extra weeks to make that even better than I would have.' No, you're thinking, 'I've got three weeks I don't need to think about this until the night before.' It's just human behavior. And when someone tells you that you have extra time to do something, you feel like, 'Well, what I do today doesn't matter.' Think back to when you were in college and a professor said you have three extra weeks to write a paper. So there's this sense that we have a lot of time. People get married later, they have their kids later, career sort of takes its form a bit later. Meg Jay: It's because a lot of the developmental milestones are happening later now. LinkedIn: Why do people think their 20s don't matter? She spoke with LinkedIn about early career mistakes, understanding the "twenty-something brain" and savoring the bliss that comes with a completed TED talk. About two-thirds of lifetime wage growth also occurs in the first 10 years of a career, she said. In a talk at TED2013 Tuesday, she called the 20s the "most defining decade of adulthood," a period when the brain has its last major growth spurt and more than half of Americans either marry or begin dating their future partner.
